Notes from MLB Pipeline Top 100 Prospect List Update

MLB Pipeline refreshed their Top 100 Prospect List last week with several changes from the pre-season. Cloverdale Clovers 2013 1st Round Pick (3rd Overall) Adley Rutschman takes the honors as the top prospect.

The Idaho Taters stand out overall with several prospects dotting the top of the list. The Taters boast the 4th (Spencer Torkelson), 9th (Marcelo Mayer), 12th (Jack Leiter) and 14th (Brennan Davis) ranked prospects in the Top 100 while holding five players currently in the big leagues still under RDBL Minor League contracts.

Biggest Risers

Rays right-hander Shane Baz (20) made the biggest leap from our preseason Top 100 to our current list, moving from No. 90 to No. 20 after finally figuring out how to harness his impressive pure stuff. Baz was a 2021 Reserve Draft pick by the Asti Grape Stompers but an early roster crunch and reports of a reliever profile led to Baz being dropped by GM Terry Shelley. Baz now figures to be one of the first names off the board in 2022.

MLB Pipeline left Lake Merced Goutfish shortstop Noelvi Marte (11) off their pre-season Top 100 List but a dominant season at Low-A for the Modesto Nuts has skyrocketed him up to 11th overall. Marte ranks right behind Yordan Alvarez as the 2nd best prospect in the Goutfish system. Goutfish catcher Francisco Alvarez (10) slots right in front of Marte in the Top 100 at 10th.

RDBL Free Agents

Baz is joined by several Top 100 newcomers that have teams excited about the 2022 Reserve Draft. New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe (15) has gained more helium than any prospect in baseball this season, with Toronto Blue Jays catcher Gabriel Moreno (34) not far behind. Right-hander Cade Cavalli (41) ranks behind Baz as the best pitching prospect available having already made the leap to Double-A.

Recent MLB Draft Picks Kahlil Watson (28), Jackson Jobe (50), Brady House (60) and Colton Cowser (83) also are expected to be some of the first names off the board on Draft Day in 2022.

College/High School Selections

It has been a standout season for the values of High School and College selections by RDBL Front Offices. Idaho Taters shortstop Marcelo Mayer (9) leads the group with fellow Taters prospect Jack Leiter (12) not far behind.

The Meinert Hops catcher Henry Davis (23) in the 10th Round of the 2021 Reserve Draft, only to see the backstop be selected 1st overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in July.

The Asti Grape Stompers round out the series of strong picks with Jordan Lawlar (13) getting early positive reviews as well.

2021 RDBL 1st Rounders

It's clear that RDBL Front Offices have strengthened their Scouting Departments in recent years as the 1st Round of the 2021 Reserve Draft looks like it will be a star-studded one. The Mt. Diablo Devils look to have nailed their 3rd overall pick in Riley Greene (7) who is tearing up the Minor Leagues and was recently promoted to Triple-A.

Maltese Falcons outfielder Zac Veen (55) looks to be a perfect fit for the RDBL, boasting a .301/.398/.510 line at just 19 years old in Low-A.

Grayson Rodriguez (14) was the sixth pitching prospect off the board, but the Lunatic Fringe were happy with the fall. Rodriguez is ranked as the top pitching prospect remaining in the Minor Leagues according to MLB Pipeline.

Not far behind him as Cloverdale Clovers right-hander Edward Cabrera (30) who received a promotion to the big leagues Monday and will make his debut Wednesday.
