Five Periods remain in the 2021 Roger Dorn Baseball League Regular Season and it has already been a historic one for multiple reasons. Just seven days remain before the RDBL Trade Deadline and with so many clubs in control of their talent beyond 2021, the market has been relatively quiet. That's expected to change this week as the inquiries for players like Jesse Winker (Fringe), Xander Bogaerts (Ducks) and others continues to heat up.
Goutfish Chase RDBL History
The Lake Merced Goutfish will enter period 18 with RDBL History on their mind as they try and chase down the more than just League Regular Season and Playoff Titles. GM Ryan Atkinson also has his eyes on the RDBL Record Book with a chance to crown themselves as the league's best team ever assembled. The Goutfish have compiled 5,713.5 points after a league-high 406.0 in Period 17, leaving them five periods of scoring in the Regular Season and 10 Periods overall.
The Goutfish will need to average 380.1 points over the final five weeks to break the Asti Grape Stompers Regular Season scoring record of 7,614.0 set in 2019. The Grapes are the only club to ever lead the RDBL in hitting and pitching, a feat the Goutfish currently hold this season.
The overall team scoring record of 9,388.0 set by the Mt. Diablo Devils in 2015 appears to also reach. The Devils record was thought to be one that would last quite a while as it marked the first season in League History with expiring contracts which led to a flurry of deals and a pseudo All-Star team for Mt. Diablo.
To reach their mark, the Goutfish will need to score 367.5 points per period over the remaining 10 weeks.
Guerrero, Jr. Chases Trout
Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. has more than just the Hitter and Activation of the Year in the RDBL as the slugger looks to be within striking distance of both his Regular Season and overall points mark. Guerrero has 374.0 points and would need to average 27.9 for the remaining five periods to top Trout's 513.5 point mark set in 2019 with the Meinert Hops.
Trout's overall record for a full RDBL season is even more attainable as Guerrero would need to average 25.1 points per period for the remaining 10 weeks to top Trout's 2013 record set with the Grapes.
Clovers Face Critical Period
Sunday night will mark the Roger Dorn Baseball League 2021 Trade Deadline and no team is facing more pressure than the Cloverdale Clovers and GM Chris Shelley. The Clovers sent both Nick Castellanos and Mookie Betts to the IL last week while a 2.5 point day on Sunday coughed up their Wild Card lead to the Las Vegas Aristocrats. The surprising Maltese Falcons continue to hang around, though the race for the six playoff spots appears to be focused on seven teams.
The Clovers can expect Castellanos, Betts and Jack Flaherty back in time of the Playoffs, putting the club in a tough position to add for the final five periods or let it ride with the current roster.
East Bay Division Up for Grabs
The Asti Grape Stompers and Alamo Short Stacks continue to battle it out at the top of the East Bay Division with the clubs currently ranked 3rd and 4th in the overall standings. With the Masters and Peninsula Division locked up between the Spokane Fightin' Fish and Goutfish, the East Bay is the only race to watch at the Division level and should be a good one down the stretch. The Stacks have emerged as one of the more aggressive teams in a buyer's market and reportedly continue to engage with clubs for more offensive help with Francisco Lindor on the IL.
