Sunday will mark the end of Period 4 as contenders and pretenders continue to emerge. With the activation window for prospects set to open in 8 days, clubs have started to analyze their options while trade conversations around the Roger Dorn Baseball League seem to be picking up steam with at least the Maltese Falcons and Mission Viejo Maulers ready to entering deals.
Moving Day for Stacks?
With the return from the IL for Drew Smyly, the Alamo Short Stacks are set to send four to the mound on Sunday. The club currently trails the Spokane Fightin' Fish by 12.0 points and will put their trust in Brandon Woodruff, Dylan Bundy, Jon Gray and Smyly to end Period 4.
Can the Fringe Offense Click?
The Fringe have surprisingly stumbled out of the blocks at the plate in 2021. The club is hitting just .232 and isn't getting much out of their catcher position as Austin Barnes and Travis d'Arnaud have combined for just 30.0 points while Jorge Alfaro is on the shelf. Auction addition Javier Baez is a big x-factor for the remainder of the season as the pending MLB Free Agent owns an abysmal 35/1 K/BB ratio entering play Sunday.
Final Day without Springer for Grapes?
The Asti Grape Stompers have been off to a hot start despite being without key off-season addition George Springer. The outfielder is expected to make his 2021 debut as soon as Monday. The club is hoping to add Ketal Marte (hamstring) back in Period 5 as well as they begin to return to full health. Waiver pickup Nate Lowe has helped ease the burden with a team-high 22.0 points in Period 4.
Can Castillo Get on Track?
Few starts have been as surprising as Luis Castillo's for the Fightin' Fish as he enters Sunday's start with a 6.05 ERA and 1.66 WHIP over four appearances. Opposing batters hit .233 against Castillo last year, but that number has risen to .317 through four 2021 starts. Despite his early struggles, the 28-year-old boasts the elite stuff to turn things around in his fifth season and will get a chance to turn around his season on Sunday against the Cardinals as the Fish look to keep hold of the top spot in the RDBL Standings.
Can Goutfish Break 200?
It's been a slog of a week for GM Ryan Atkinson's talented club as they enter Sunday with just 134.5 points on Period 4. The rough week has pushed the Goutfish into 7th place but will send trusted starter Lance McCullers to the mound against the Angels Sunday who could be without Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon again due to injury. $40 Auction purchase Charlie Blackmon is a name to watch as the outfielder has just one home run and is slashing .153/.275/.271 through 59 at-bats to start the season for the Goutfish.
