Scoring is up in a major way in Period 5 as five teams have posted 96.0 points or more in just two days of games this week. The Lake Merced Goutfish (165.5), Mission Viejo Maulers (126.5) and Burlingame Blue Ducks (118.0) are leading the way with a full slate of games set for Wednesday.
Here's the latest On The Lookout:
Maulers Look to Pile On
The Mission Viejo Maulers have had a dream start to Period 5 with 126.5 points as their pitching staff has allowed just one earned run in 14.0 innings while their offense is hot with a 24-for-73 start (.329) along with nine walks. GM Chris Ferraro will look to cross the 200 point mark in the period with Frankie Montas (vs.TB), Justin Verlander (vs.SEA) and Corey Kluber (@OAK) on the mound.
Clevinger Makes Return
The Aristocrats will see the long-awaited return of Mike Clevinger, an off-season addition from the Mission Viejo Maulers. Clevinger entered camp at the tail end of his recovery from Tommy John surgery, but he subsequently picked up a sprained right knee that further delayed his return to action. He's ready to go after making three rehab starts, a stretch in which he struck out 15 batters in 8.2 innings while giving up just two runs. He unlikely to handle a full starter's workload right away, however, as he threw just 3.2 innings and 67 pitches in his final tune-up but will add another arm to an already elite starting rotation for GM Nick Holz and Assistant GM Nick Kusanovich.
Elders Look for Jolt
The senior citizens of the RDBL currently occupy the final three spots in the RDBL Standings entering play Wednesday and will need to see a jolt quickly in order to keep pace with the frantic scoring across the league. The Asti Grape Stompers (1.0), Idaho Taters (20.5) and St. Joseph Jokers (6.0) have combined for just 27.5 points this period with the Jokers crushed by the -21.0 point return from Lou Trivino Tuesday night.
Brash Looks to Adjust to Big Leagues
After back to back strong outings to open the season, Grapes right-hander Matt Brash has failed to reach five innings with -28.0 points over his last two outings combined. Command was noted as an area of improvement in his profile and it's certainly showed with 12 walks in his last three outings.
Stacks Offense Slowing
The Alamo Short Stacks had opened up a large lead at the plate but the unit is slashing just .248/.287/.388 over the last seven days as the Mission Viejo Maulers close in on the top offensive spot. After a hot start, Seiya Suzuki is just 8-for-47 over the last 14 days while Marcell Ozuna is right with him with a 8-for-50 line over the same span.
