The Maltese Falcons have opened up conversations with Roger Dorn Baseball League clubs on star outfielder Bryce Harper (3/$50) according to sources. The club appears to be focused on a Top 30 prospect and a 2022 1st Round selection based on initial reports.
Harper would undoubtedly fit on any RDBL contender as he plays through the final season of his RDBL contract. An OBP machine, Harper is slashing .321/.448/.615 entering play Thursday and appears to have dodged serious injury after taking a fastball to the face on Wednesday night against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Among the clubs reportedly interested are the Alamo Short Stacks who sat in 1st place to start Thursday and could use some additional thump in their lineup. The club reportedly make outfielder Eloy Jimenez (2R/$3) available, but the Falcons were more focused on players with more control than just 2022 according to sources close to the club.
Harper's $50 contract would be a significant impact to any club who acquires him as clubs are forced to stay at or under the $325 in-season salary cap.
The Lunatic Fringe could be a key team to watch as the club possesses a strong amount of big league pitching depth that could be used as assets in a return for Harper. The club's offense is in dire need of impact talent as they have underperformed to date with a .234/.307/.393 line to date.
Around the RDBL
- While talks around Harper have started, the Falcons have also had inquiries on right-hander Tyler Mahle (1/$8) but have no plans to move the breakout starter. Mahle owns a 1.75 ERA and 0.97 WHIP through 25 2/3 innings so far in 2021.
