The Spokane Fightin' Fish are certainly feeling the heat in the final Wild Card spot as the Cloverdale Clovers and Burlingame Blue Ducks sit under 30 points behind them entering play on Tuesday. According to sources, GM Michael Tirabassi made a substantial offer to the Honolulu Hammerheads Monday, headlined by budding star Julio Rodriguez in an attempt to land a bevy of expiring contracts including Corbin Burnes (3R/$5) and Byron Buxton (3/$7).
With the Hammerheads sitting less than 100 points behind the Fish themselves, and the impending return of Chris Sale and Jacob deGrom, GM Ross Horiuchi declined according to sources. The offer reportedly came with the understanding that this would be the final time Rodriguez would be included in an offer.
The Heads have been dealt a number of significant injuries this season while currently having nine players on the IL. The club is hopeful Alex Kirilloff can help soon as the slugger has torn the cover off the ball in Triple-A as he awaits his return to the big leagues.
Around the RDBL
- At least one RDBL club reached out to the Mt. Diablo Devils about the availability of Bryce Harper (1/$62) and Jose Ramirez (1/$47), but was quickly turned away by GM Jason Watson according to sources. Watson has no plans to move either according to those familiar with the club's plan for 2023, even if they fall out of the race this season.
- The Las Vegas Aristocrats have seen a slight uptick in their offense (8th in hitter scoring over the last 14 days), but continue to have talks about bringing in more help. The 'Crats rank fifth in pitcher scoring while posting a league-best 3.02 Team ERA.
- Thanks to a recent surge, the Burlingame Blue Ducks have emerged as heavy buyers. GM Ryan Walsh reportedly pursued Freddie Freeman and George Springer, but an offer headlined by Reid Detmers wasn't enough to entice the Grapes. The club is set to get Jack Flaherty back Wednesday, which could serve as a big boost to a rotation that has led the league is scoring over the last month.
