Rumor Central: Scherzer Drawing Interest

The Mt. Diablo Devils are not ready to wave the white flag yet but the Front Office has received inquiries about ace Max Scherzer (2/$68) according to sources. Scherzer has been stellar to start 2021, entering his start on Wednesday ranked 8th in pitcher scoring while compiling a 2.10 ERA and 0.76 WHIP.

He will make his ninth start Wednesday against the Chicago Cubs and one of the clubs who is expected to be in attendance is the Honolulu Hammerheads who currently hold down the second of three Wild Card spots.

Scherzer's $68 contract will involve some juggling from any interested club with the in-season salary cap of $325.

Notes Around the RDBL

- With Christian Yelich back in the lineup, the St. Joseph Jokers remain focused on contending this season and will play out the next 4-6 weeks before considering any moves for the future. Despite sitting in 15th place, the Jokers remain just 187.5 points out of the final Wild Card spot.

- Zack Wheeler (1/$45) has drawn the most attention on what's left of the Maltese Falcons roster according to sources. Wheeler upped his value again on Tuesday night with a 32.0 point start, giving up one unearned run on five hits while striking out 10 across seven innings. Wheeler owns a 2.52 ERA and 0.99 WHIP and can be under control through 2023 leaving the Falcons seeking a strong return in talks.

One club to watch in the hunt for Wheeler is the Cloverdale Clovers who have surged up the standings in the top Wild Card spot. The Clovers are without Mike Soroka (Achilles/Shoulder), Jesus Luzardo (hand) and Huascar Ynoa (hand) while ranking 8th in team pitching. Soroka's injuries would likely be a concern for RDBL clubs but the upside of Luzardo, who is on his 1R/$1 contract in 2021, could certainly be a valuable asset to dangle for GM Chris Shelley.

- The Burlingame Blue Ducks remain focused on 2021, sitting in 8th place entering play Wednesday, but a shaky pitching staff has GM Ryan Walsh open to all considerations in the coming weeks. One name drawing early interest is Matt Boyd (2FA/$5) who is in his RDBL walk year and providing great results with a 2.45 ERA and 0.96 WHIP through eight starts.
