The Maltese Falcons are reportedly considering putting right-hander Zack Wheeler (1/$25) on the market as contenders struggle with hits to their starting rotation according to sources. The club has built a strong Farm System, but internally believes their next window of contention might not be until 2023 which could lead to a deal for Wheeler before the August 1st deadline.
Of course, any move would have to involve a large return for the Falcons given Wheeler's contract and performance this season. The former San Francisco Giants 1st Rounder has maintained a tremendous 2.26 ERA with a 145:26 K:BB across 119.2 innings on the campaign and ranks 5th in overall scoring with 388.0 points.
Multiple clubs are expected to have scouts in attendance for Wheeler's start against the Miami Marlins today.
The Spokane Fightin' Fish stand out as the most obvious fit given their loss of Trevor Bauer, Tyler Glasnow and Pablo Lopez. A move for Wheeler would likely have to see them part ways with one of their prized offensive prospects with either Ke'Bryan Hayes or Julio Rodriguez as the key piece of a return. GM Michael Tirabassi had reportedly informed teams that Rodriguez was off limits, but the injury to Lopez might have changed things in recent days.
