The Lake Merced Goutfish continued to hold onto the top spot but things have tightened up substantially as the Asti Grape Stompers start Period 4 just 1.0 point out of first place. Six clubs have eclipsed the 800 point mark in what is already shaping up to be a very competitive season in the Roger Dorn Baseball League.
While the Lunatic Fringe and Cloverdale Clovers have yet to catch fire, both are certainly talented enough to do so which should lead to a major race for the six valuable Playoff spots.
Here's the latest State Farm Weekly Recap for Period 3.
State Farm Team of the Week: Asti Grape Stompers
368.5 Points in Period 3
69-272, 272 AB, 14 2B, 3B, 7 HR, 27 RBI, 35 R, 5 SB, 38 BB, CS, 8 HP
49.1 INN, 35 HA, 12 BBI, 43 K, 8 ER, 6 W, L, 2 S, HB
The Asti Grape Stompers put together a dominant week at the plate and on the mound, leading all teams with 368.5 points while pushing their way into 2nd place entering Period 4. Freddie Freeman led the way on offense (8-for-26, 2 2B, HR, 8 BB) while Marcus Stroman fired 14 innings of one run baseball, allowing just seven hits over that span. Waiver claim Lou Trivino picked up a pair of saves while throwing four scoreless as he pitched in 23.0 points out of the bullpen.
Hitter of the Week: Ronald Acuña, Goutfish
10-for-26, 3 HR, 2B, 3B, 7 BB, 40.5 Points
Another dominant week for Acuña has kept the Goutfish on top of the standings as the outfielder continues to pull away from the rest of the hitters across the league. The 2R/$3 stud leads all hitters with 93.0 points this season while slashing .419/.486/.887 through 62 at-bats. An abdominal strain might be the only thing that can slow down Acuña as additional tests expected on Monday should indicate how long he will be sidelined.
Pitcher of the Week: Shane Bieber, Fringe
17 INN, 9 HA, 3 BBI, 24 K, 3 ER, 2 W, HB, 73.0 Points
These are the weeks you come to expect from a pitcher who holds the second highest contact in RDBL history at $72. Bieber dominated in Period 3, firing 17.0 innings, allowing just three runs while punching out 24. He now ranks third in overall pitching scoring, trailing only Tyler Glasnow and Trevor Bauer through three periods.
Prospect of the Week: Jazz Chisholm, Heads
9-for-20, 2 HR, 2 2B, 4 BB, SB, 33.5 Points
The Heads are kicking themselves for not activating Chisholm but it's not a bad consolation prize to see his value rise by the week while still under a Minor League deal. Chisholm raked in Period 3, slashing .450/.560/.850, finishing tied for 2nd in hitter scoring with 33.5.
State Farm Life Insurance Player of the Week: Nick Senzel, Jokers
0-for-14, 4 Ks, -7.0 Points
It was a rough week for the Jokers activation as Senzel went hitless in 14 at-bats without drawing a walk. With Tyler Naquin hitting well early, Senzel is beginning to get squeezed for playing time.
