State Farm Weekly Recap: Periods 1/2

With a week and a half in the books, we are combining the State Farm Weekly Recap for Periods 1 and 2. The 2021 season is shaping up to be a competitive one as 13 teams hold some optimism about their chances to compete for a Playoff spot while the Mission Viejo Maulers and Maltese Falcons pour their focus in to rebuilding for the 2022 season.

Here's the latest State Farm Weekly Recap:

State Farm Team of the Week: Lake Merced Goutfish

The Goutfish haven't peaked on offense yet, outside of the ridiculous start from Ronald Acuña (.444/.462/.917), but still find themselves in 1st place entering Period 3 thanks to a dominant start from their pitching staff. The group holds a 1.79 ERA and 1.02 WHIP while pacing the RDBL with 258.0 pitching points. Holdovers Lance Lynn and Zach Plesac have been the key contributors, combining to allow just two earned runs in 26.0 innings.

They are one of four pitching staffs without a save, an area where GM Ryan Atkinson could be on the lookout in future weeks.

Hitter of the Week: OF J.D. Martinez (Fightin' Fish)

After a down 2020 season, J.D. Martinez was one of the more difficult values to peg on Draft Day. He ultimately landed a $24 deal from GM Michael Tirabassi and the Fightin' Fish, a move that looks brilliant through two periods. Martinez blasted three home runs on Sunday alone and is leading all hitters with 58.0 points while slashing .472/.500/1.083 through 36 at-bats.

Pitching of the Week: RHP Joe Musgrove (Aristocrats)

It's hard to top a no-hitter through two periods, but Joe Musgrove doubled that up with another scoreless six inning outing. The right-hander has 83.0 points thus far, 19 more than the second highest pitcher in the RDBL. Musgrove was a hot name entering 2021, landing a $23 deal from the 'Crats which also looks like a steal early in the season.

Prospect of the Week: Yermin Mercedes (Jokers)

For about two years, I have wondered why the Jokers continued to roster Yermin Mercedes. The first two weeks of the RDBL season have proven me wrong as the unknown slugger has made a name for himself with a 15-for-28 start to the season that included hits in his first eight at-bats. Mercedes ranks 6th in hitter scoring entering Period 3. With Adam Engel due back soon, playing time could be an issue for Mercedes but his long-term value appears to be high which would be a big boost to the Jokers Farm System.

State Farm Life Insurance Player of the Week: Madison Bumgarner (Jokers)

GM Rick Steen poured money into the club's offense, using just $31 on pitching. That group has limped to a 5.13 ERA and 1.53 WHIP with 71.0 points, all bottom marks in the RDBL entering Period 3. Bumgarner has been one of the biggest culprits with an 11.00 ERA and 2.22 WHIP, producing -27.0 points through a pair of starts.
