The Spokane Fightin' Fish and Mission Viejo Maulers repeated history with Kris Bryant at the center of a Saturday afternoon deal. The Fightin' Fish acquired Bryant (2/$50) in exchange for a 2021 6th Round Pick (79th Overall).
The Fish have plenty of history with Bryant after acquiring the third baseman from the Maulers in December of 2014. He went on to win the 2015 RDBL Prospect of the Year and 2016 Activation of the Year while helping the Fish win two RDBL Championships. This time, Bryant will join the Fish with a much more expensive contract and much to prove after a pair of down seasons on the North Side.
Like a lot of people, Bryant would love to forget all about 2020 after posting a career-worst .644 OPS. For comparison, his next-lowest mark was the .834 OPS he recorded in 2018, and he finished with an OPS north of .900 in three of his first five MLB seasons. Bryant battled a variety of injuries and only played in 34 of the Cubs' 60 games. Injuries have been an issue the past few years. He played in 147 games in 2019 and just 107 in 2018 after playing in at least 150 games each of his first three seasons.
Bryant remains a talented player, but he's lost more than a little bit of his luster since that a magical 2016 season when he won NL MVP and the Cubs won the World Series. His days in Chicago might be numbered which will be another storyline to watch leading into Draft Day.
The Maulers overhaul continues as 6th Round Pick was the second selection the club acquired on Saturday.
