The Maltese Falcons have been exploring deals for right-hander Tyler Glasnow (2R/$3) and found their match Wednesday evening as they struck a deal with the Spokane Fightin' Fish.
The Fish will acquire Glasnow and a 2021 4th Round Pick (53rd Overall) in exchange for 2021 1st (4th Overall) and 3rd (34th Overall) Picks.
At 6-foot-8, Glasnow has struggled at times with his mechanics and command. He's been inconsistent during his time in the majors between Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay (career 4.43 ERA, 1.34 WHIP) and has also battled a few injuries, most notably shoulder trouble in 2016 and forearm tightness in 2019. What's not in question is his physical ability. When things are going right, Glasnow is among the most dominant pitchers in the game with a 97-mph fastball and a curveball that ranks in the 92nd percentile in terms of spin rate. His stuff is so naturally filthy that he can get hitters out even when he isn't hitting his spots.
The right-hander's 2020 ended on a sour note as he gave up a whopping nine homers in 28.2 postseason innings. But the control of two seasons at $3 and $5 certainly make that finish easier to swallow for Fish GM Michael Tirabassi.
Glasnow will join a stellar Fish rotation which is expected to be anchored by Trevor Bauer (2/$55) followed by Luis Castillo (2/$10), Zac Gallen (2FA/$5) and Chris Paddack (2/$14) while Casey Mize waits in the wings.
For the Falcons, the deal helps solidify the rumors that have circled this Winter as the club looks to start a quick rebuild. While Glasnow was young and cheap, the addition of the 4th overall pick coupled with their own 10th selection should help quickly strengthen a currently weak Farm System.
The club doesn't expect to be finished this off-season as they continue to discuss right-hander Kyle Hendricks (2/$29) and could also make slugger Bryce Harper (3/$50) available as well.
