The Alamo Short Stacks are closing in on a return to health as Alex Bregman and Eloy Jimenez are set to return soon after the All-Star break. A contender on offense, GM Greg Shelley and the Stacks Front Office felt pressure to try and patch up their pitching rotation which they believe they accomplished in a Monday deal with the Meinert Hops.
The Stacks will acquire starting pitchers John Means (2FA/$5) and Taijuan Walker (2FA/$5) as well as IF/OF Trey Mancini (2FA/$5) from the Hops in exchange for 2022 1st and 2nd Round Picks as well as prospects Jordan Groshans and Erick Peña. The teams will also exchange Waiver Claim positions for Wednesday which the Stacks will reportedly use on Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh who was called up to the big leagues on Sunday and could serve as a potential keeper for 2022.
Means and Walker will slot in alongside Brandon Woodruff, Yu Darvish and Julio Urias with Logan Gilbert looking to be a viable playoff activation candidate with Tarik Skubal, Jon Gray and Frankie Montas providing depth.
Mancini will slot into an outfield that could use a boost. Eligible at first base as well, Mancini is slashing .256/.331/.460 this season with 16 home runs.
The Hops have officially turned the page to 2022 with the deal as they hope to return to contention after an injury plagued season that included significant missed time for Mike Trout, Luis Robert and Anthony Rendon. The club will now have multiple selections in both the 1st and 2nd Rounds.
Groshans will slot in as the Hops 4th ranked prospect by CJ Abrams, Asa Lacy and Henry Davis while Pena will slot in 10th.
