Chourio Clear Prize of 2023 Reserve Draft in Wild Race for 1st Pick

The 2023 Reserve Draft seems to have a clear prize as outfielder Jackson Chourio has continued his dramatic ascent in prospect circles and was ranked 3rd overall by Keith Law in Monday's mid-season update. With 7th place being awarded the top overall selection, the race for the pick could be as crazy as ever before.

The Burlingame Blue Ducks currently sit in 7th place and will hold the rights to their 1st Round selection if they miss the Playoffs. But if they can jump over the Lake Merced Goutfish for the final Wild Card spot and the Goutfish land in 7th to finish the Regular Season, that pick would be owned by the St. Joseph Jokers who already boast Law's 2nd and 5th ranked prospects in Gunnar Henderson and Gabriel Moreno.

The Spokane Fightin' Fish have a rooting interest for the Honolulu Hammerheads to make a run from their current position of 10th, as they own the Heads 1st Round selection for 2023. It would be the only first round selection currently for the Fish who sent their own 1st Round pick to the Asti Grape Stompers.

Things certainly could change, but Chourio looks to be the safe bet for the top spot as it currently sits.

Notes on The Athletic Top 60 Prospect List

- The Maltese Falcons certainly have a Los Angeles Dodgers vibe currently as they lead the RDBL entering Period 18 yet still placed five prospects in the Top 60 list with all ranking inside the Top 31. The group is led by right-hander Eury Perez who has already reached Double-A at just 19 years old.

- The rankings show just how much the Alamo Short Stacks have pushed into the middle of the table in 2022 as they have dealt away the 13th, 18th, 33rd and 46th ranked players on the list over the last four weeks.

- The Cloverdale Clovers and Asti Grape Stompers are absolutely loaded on the Farm, with both clubs likely battling it out over the final 8 weeks of the season for 2022 Farm System of the Year honors.

- The St. Joseph Jokers Gunnar Henderson (#2) is the highest ranked prospect in Franchise History since Byron Buxton held the top spot in 2014.

- Prospects not ranked due to their current MLB status include Adley Rutschman (Clovers), O'Neil Cruz (Clovers), Alek Thomas (Clovers), Hunter Greene (Grapes), Nolan Jones (Ducks), William Contreras (Crats), Nolan Gorman (Taters), Triston McKenzie (Fringe), Josiah Gray (Fringe), Reid Detmers (Fringe), Michael Harris (Hops), CJ Abrams (Hops), Josh Lowe (Maulers), Riley Greene (Devils), Nick Lodolo (Devils), MacKenzie Gore (Stacks), Julio Rodriguez (Fish) and Kyle Wright (Jokers).
